Algarve Off Peak: The Best Time to Visit for Warm Sea and Half the Prices

The Algarve off peak has warm water into November, hotel prices that halve and coast paths you can walk alone. Here is the month by month picture.

Most visitors book the Algarve for the two weeks a year when it is most expensive and most crowded. The region has roughly 300 days of sunshine, a sea that holds its summer heat into November and a coast path you can walk in a t shirt in February. Going off peak is the single easiest way to have a better trip for less money.

Month by month

November to February

Daytime highs of 16 to 19 degrees, sea around 16, and long stretches of blue days broken by a few genuinely wet ones. This is when cyclists, walkers and birdwatchers arrive. Hotels in Albufeira and Lagos drop to a third of August rates, some resorts close, and the towns feel Portuguese again. The Ria Formosa near Faro fills with flamingos and spoonbills.

March and April

The hillsides go green and the almond and citrus scent is everywhere. Air around 20 to 22 degrees, sea still cold at 16 to 17. Perfect for the Rota Vicentina and the Seven Hanging Valleys trail. Easter week is the one price spike to avoid.

May and early June

The sweet spot. Air 24 degrees, sea 19 and climbing, everything open, prices still around 40 per cent below August. Beach restaurants have tables at one in the afternoon without a booking.

Late September and October

The other sweet spot, and warmer in the water. The sea peaks near 22 degrees in late September and stays swimmable through October. Light turns golden earlier in the evening, which is why photographers prefer these weeks.

What it saves you

A sea view apartment in Lagos that costs 180 euros a night in the first week of August goes for 70 to 90 in late October. Flights from northern Europe fall by half. Car hire, which is the real August trap, drops from around 60 euros a day to 20. Nothing about the coastline changes.

Where to go when it is quiet

For beaches with cliffs, stay between Lagos and Carvoeiro and walk to the coves described in our Algarve secret beaches guide. For wind and wildness, go west of Sagres to the Costa Vicentina, which is spectacular in winter storms and empty. For calm shallow water, the eastern Algarve near Tavira and Cabanas has sandbank islands reached by a five minute ferry, and the towns stay open all year because locals live there.

Practical notes

Some beach kiosks and boat tours pause between November and March, so check before travelling for a specific activity. Winter accommodation without proper heating can be genuinely cold at night, since Portuguese building stock is built for summer, and it is worth confirming there is heating rather than just air conditioning. Rain comes in a few concentrated days rather than drizzle, so a wet forecast rarely ruins a week. If you are planning a longer trip, our affordable Portugal travel guide has the wider budget picture.

January and February, when flights and accommodation are at their lowest and many hotels run winter rates for stays of a week or more.

Yes. Sea temperatures hold around 20 to 22 degrees through early October, warmer than most of May.
