Cristiano Ronaldo made his debut for Portugal in August 2003, four days after signing for Manchester United, and the two careers have run in parallel ever since. At Juventus he added two Serie A titles, an Italian Cup and two Super Cups. A second spell at Manchester United was followed by his move to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, where he has continued to score at a high rate and won the Arab Club Champions Cup.

Individually he has received five Ballon d'Or awards, four European Golden Shoes and repeated recognition as the outstanding player in three different national leagues. His career total of senior goals passed nine hundred, a figure without precedent in the recognised records of the sport, and his scoring has been distributed across four leagues rather than concentrated in one.

The broader contribution is harder to quantify but widely acknowledged. Portugal's current generation was formed while he was already established, and the country's academies, particularly at Sporting, Benfica and Porto, have exported players at a pace that reflects renewed confidence in the domestic system. For a country of ten million people, two senior international trophies and a sustained presence in the latter stages of major tournaments represent a substantial return, and his role in that period is a matter of record rather than opinion.
